Parker helps Schaumburg oust Fenton

When Schaumburg's boys basketball team plays well, it can be tough to beat.

When Brendan Parker plays well, the Saxons can be even tougher.

That was the case Monday night during the opening round of the Class 4A regional at Wheeling.

Parker scored 16 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and had 3 steals in the Saxons' 63-30 knockout of Fenton.

The Bison, seeded No. 20, finished their season at 6-21. Alejandro Orosco led Fenton with 7 points. Derrien Warren had all of his 6 points in the first quarter.

"We thought we had a good game plan against Schaumburg," said Fenton coach Josh Payton. "We knew that they had played some quality teams. Watching them on film was a lot different than playing them. Parker really hurt us. We had a good defender on him but he got off some good shots and made them. He did more against us than what we saw him do on film."

Parker started the Saxons going in the right direction by scoring the first 4 points as Schaumburg (12-17) raced to a 22-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Demetrious Roumbos hit two 3-pointers and Charlie Quilico added 4 of his 9 points in the quarter.

"We wanted to get out to a good and fast start tonight," said Parker. "We forced some turnovers with our defense and that got us going."

The Saxons forced 7 turnovers in the first quarter, which led to 11 points. At halftime Schaumburg led 31-14, and the lead stretched to 42-23 after three quarters.

Jason Schoo scored 10 points for the Saxons' only other double-figure scorer. Eleven players scored for the Saxons. Schaumburg, the 13th seed, out-rebounded Fenton 23-17.

"We executed very well on offense to start the game," said Schaumburg coach Marty Manning. "Because of that, we got some nice easy shots to make. We did a nice job getting points off of the turnovers. The second quarter we were a bit stagnant. In the third quarter we began to execute again. Tomorrow will be tougher."

The Saxons will take on Lake Zurich, the No. 4 seed in the Barrington sectional, at Wheeling in a 6 p.m. tipoff.

"They have a great team with good shooters," said Manning of Lake Zurich. "We are going to have to be able to contest their shots and rebounds so they do not get second looks. If we don't, it will be a long night. We're going to need to be patient and take high-percentage shots."

"We know they are good," said Parker. "We'll have to play well as a team to beat them."
