Rapp, Scully lead St. Edward by Wheaton Academy

St. Edward seniors Cece Rapp and Ryann Scully wanted to round out their careers at home in style Saturday and after their 61-50 Metro Suburban West win over Wheaton Academy on Senior Night, there was little doubt they left it all on the court in their final send-off in Elgin.

Rapp led the Green Wave with 16 points and 8 rebounds while Scully tore it up from downtown, knocking in four 3-pointers for 14 points that ended St. Edward's (18-9, 6-5) regular season on a good note heading into Monday's Class 3A Sycamore regional opener against Kaneland.

"That was our goal," said Rapp, who scored 6 points in each of the second and third quarters and fed off the vibe and energy. "We had a great time in the locker room beforehand and (said) let's go out there and have fun and just make this a great night."

The Wave, unselfish throughout with 4 scorers pitching in at least 10 points, shot 47.5 percent from the field on 40 shots, which included 6 of 11 from 3-point range. Scully nailed all 4 in the first half, including one just before the halftime buzzer from the right wing to give St. Edward a 32-23 lead.

"It was pretty key definitely going into the half, it's good to get points so you can ease your way into the second half," Scully said of her shot that helped get the season sweep of the Warriors. "It's definitely nice when that happens."

"Ryann's always got that potential to hit those big shots, thank goodness she was hot tonight," St. Edward coach Michelle Dawson said. "And we had some really good passes into Cece tonight and she finished."

Wheaton Academy (16-10, 4-8) saw the game favor to the Wave when Rapp asserted herself down low with three minutes left in the second quarter. And when Scully found Rapp on a cut to the left block St. Edward led 29-23, before Scully's shot at the end of the half.

"It opened it up," Warriors' coach Beth Mitchell said of Scully's 3. "It was sort of a backbreaker for us a little bit."

Wheaton Academy's Jamie Netzley led all scorers with 23 points to go with 4 rebounds and 4 assists and got the deficit down to 6 on her 3-pointer to open the third but St. Edward's Yssa Sto. Domingo answered right back with 3 of her 11 points to put the lead back up to 9. The Warriors clawed to within 5 but Scully helped open things up again with a drive with 2:45 left for a 43-32 advantage. Whether it was outside or inside, the flow for the Green Wave was fluid throughout and regardless of their 20 turnovers, they had an easy time moving the ball and finding open players.

"I felt like we had a good flow to our offense tonight," Dawson said. "We were getting the shots we wanted. Just a really nice win."

Katie Castoro (9 of 10 at the free-throw line) also added 14 points for the Wave's second-straight victory while the Warriors received 10 points and 5 rebounds from Izzy McNally, but the team shot at a 29.8 percent clip, a large disparity between what the Wave lofted.

"I thought we actually played good defense but when a team shoots 70 percent from the 3-point line and 52 percent from 2-point it's hard to beat that," Mitchell said. "All credit to them, their shots were going in and I thought we missed some shots we probably should have made."

Scully also added that the momentum was huge for the Wave heading into next week and Dawson endorsed that notion.

"It was a very good win sending us into next week," Dawson said. "Kaneland that we're going to see next week has a lot of similarities with their guard play and having an inside presence, we're working on some stuff tonight for next week."
