Maine South snaps Palatine streak

Palatine gave Maine South's boys basketball team a stiff challenge in a game played at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee on Saturday, but a big fourth quarter from George Sargeant tilted the outcome in the Hawks' favor.

Sargeant scored 10 fourth-quarter points, inlcuding 6-for-6 at the free throw line, as Maine South won 60-54. He finished with a game-high 23 points.

Palatine (19-7) led by 1 point entering the fourth quarter.

Justin Chaney paced the Pirates with 16 points and Chris Macahon contributed 12. Chaney drained four 3s.

The loss snapped an eight-game win streak for the Pirates.

Conant 53, Glenbrook North 47: The host Cougars (14-8) earned a weekend split by topping the Spartans in nonconference play.

Danny Sotos made three 3s and finished with a team-high 16 points. Jimmy Sotos and Benajmin Schols both contributed 10 points, while Kyle Bradley had 8 and Brandon Vinson 7.

Glenbrook North's Pat Hamilton led all scorers with 26 points, which included six 3s.

Fenwick 57, St. Viator 51: St. Viator held a 1-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but a 20-point period from the host Friars made the difference.

Mike Smith scored 26 points to lead all scorers for Fenwick.

"Smith was the difference," said St. Viator coach Quin Hayes.

Sal Cannella paced the Lions (14-6) with 18 points, and Jake Stepuszek had 13.

St. Viator is back in action Tuesday with a home game against Lake Forest in nonconference play.

Buffalo Grove 52, Wheeling 41: Conner Reid led a balanced Bison scoring effort with 12 points as the Bison prevailed in the Centennial Classic at Robert Morris University in Arlington Heights.

Reid finished with 12 points as nine players scored for Buffalo Grove (5-17, 2-6) in Mid-Suburban East play.

Wheeling (4-17, 1-7) was led by Jalen Dennis with 10 points.
