IC Catholic spreads out the scoring

It was an overall good team win for the IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team as the Knights defeated Metro Suburban West opponent Fenton 44-19 on Thursday in Elmhurst.

The Knights had seven of their eight players score and got an extra boost from freshmen Claire Gibler and Kiersten King, who combined for 21 points against the Bison.

Despite the 25-point win IC Catholic and Fenton both had a slow start in the first quarter, when each team was trying to figure each other out. IC Cathlic ended the first eight minutes up 8-3.

"I thought that we we're a little rushed offensively and I mean the shots weren't falling in the first half essentially, but the (defensive) press looked good," said Knights coach Aubree Schuett. "(We) rotated well, we didn't foul as much as we typically do in the press, another thing we've been working on. These kids are so coachable, it was nice to see things translate and come together."

It was a 15-point second half that really helped pace the Knights. Inside-out passing from the Knights post players helped spread the floor and gave guards the options to shoot and drive.

Defensively IC Catholic (13-10, 4-7) helped hold Fenton (5-16, 0-10) to just 11 points in the half, when the Bison went 4 of 18 from the floor, 1 of 9 from behind the arc and 2 of 4 from the free-throw line.

"I think what we did really well was communicate in the defense," Schuett said. "The half-court defense was really good, it was something we've been talking a lot, so it was nice to see that kind of translated and come out."

Gibler and King helped pace the Knights in the second half. Gibler had 9 of her 11 points in the second half while King had 6 of her 10 points.

"Kiersten's been kind of one of those kids that came to us with a lot of things that she needed to learn defensively. Super athletic, we knew that was gonna be a huge plus. And she's been super patient… ," Schuett said. "Claire plays so much basketball, we talk all the time, she's like a freshman in a junior body. She's knowledgeable, she sees the floor well."

The Bison found open looks against IC Catholic, but Fenton struggled to execute, putting up just 8 points in the second half.

"We accomplished a couple of things we were trying to do, we've struggled putting the ball in the basket. Struggled to do that again today," said Fenton coach Tim Anderson. "It's just not happening for us."
