Girls basketball: Week 8 MVP
Grant junior guard Jasmine Sangster has earned Daily Herald girls basketball MVP honors for her recent performances.
Jasmine Sangster, Grant: The junior continues to develop as one of Lake County's best guards, and she was too much to handle in back-to-back games. She scored 21 points in a 58-39 win over Wauconda and followed up with career-high-tying 26 points in a 58-47 victory over Lakes.
Kayla Barreto, Huntley: This junior point guard made 10 3-pointers in three Red Raiders' wins last week, which included the championship of the MLK Tournament at DeKalb. She had three 3s for 9 points in a 50-48 win over Stevenson in the DeKalb semifinals then came back with four 3s and 14 points in the 48-43 title game win over Rockford Boylan. In a 58-34 triumph over Jacobs, Barreto added 11 points and three more 3-pointers to bring her trey total for the season to 43 as her team moved its record to 20-4.
Jada Blackwell, Schaumburg: What a week for Blackwell, a 5-foot-11 senior. The Saxons won four games in six days and Jada was the top scorer in each: 22 vs. McHenry, 17 vs. Leyden, 13 vs. Palatine (including 9 of the team's 10 points in OT) and 19 against Niles West.
Rainey Kuykendall, Montini: The 6-foot senior post player scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the Broncos' victory against Brooks at the McDonald's Shootout. She followed that up with her second double-double of the week, 13 points and 13 rebounds in a win over North Lawndale.
Kyra Washington, St. Charles East: After scoring 14 points in a loss to No. 8 Conant, Washington led the Saints with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting as they snapped a 5-game losing streak by beating No. 18 Bartlett. Washington then grabbed 13 of the Saints' 20 rebounds while adding 7 points and 3 assists in an upset of No. 12 Geneva.
