Jacobs goes deep to beat Dundee-Crown

Jacobs went from having its depth tested in the first half to testing rival Dundee-Crown from deep range in the second half of a 58-39 win in Carpentersville on Wednesday.

Jacobs survived the first half of the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball matchup with a 26-21 lead despite 2 fouls on leading scorer Chrishawn Orange and 3 fouls apiece against big men Cameron Krutwig (6-foot-8) and Matt Bindi (6-4).

Junior reserve forward Tim Randl (6-1) helped pick up the slack for Jacobs with a putback basket in the second quarter, when he grabbed 3 of his team-high 9 rebounds.

"I think when (Randl) came in and showed that he was fine with all this noise and distraction and he was just playing hard, I think everyone built off that," said Bindi, who led all scorers with 13 points.

"Talk about a kid stepping up and making plays," Jacobs coach Jim Roberts said of Randl. "He did a great job."

Dundee-Crown (6-13, 2-3) pulled within 26-23 at the start of the third quarter on one of 6 buckets by senior guard Sam Buckley, who led the Chargers with 12 points.

However, Bindi countered with 8 points in the quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers, the second of which staked Jacobs (15-5, 5-0) to a 38-28 lead with 2:20 left in the period.

Leading 40-30 entering the fourth quarter, Jacobs pulled away via the deep ball. Senior guard Kenton Mack connected on 3-pointers on consecutive trips and reserve guard Kyle Ross drained a 3-pointer from the left side to cap a 9-2 run that extended the lead to 49-32 with 5:13 to play. Jacobs sank 8 of 22 attempts from 3-point range, 6 of 11 in the second half.

"We just had to keep working our offense and get the shots we knew we could get," Ross said. "I'm just glad I could knock down the open one."

The Golden Eagles won the rebounding battle 35-23 overall, 16-7 in the second half.

"I thought Jacobs came out and executed their will in the second half," Dundee-Crown coach Lance Huber said. "We hung in there for awhile, but the object is to hang in there for four quarters, not for two. They came out and took control in the second half. We have to be able to find a way to compete with those guys for four quarters. They're a really good team and they're a tough matchup, not just for us but for a lot of other teams."

Jacobs led 17-7 after a quarter, thanks to 7 points from Orange, who contributed 9 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Mack finished with 12 points, all in the second half, and Cory Boeckh sank a pair of 3-pointers in an 8-point performance.

Jacobs limited Dundee-Crown leading scorer Kiwi Seals to 9 points on 3-of-14 shooting, well below his 17.4-point average.
