Haviland, Lakes make it four straight

Ellie Haviland's buzzer-beating shot did more than allow Lakes' girls basketball team to edge visiting Lake Forest on Monday night.

With their 46-45 victory, the Eagles have the first four-game winning streak in their history. The win also avenged a 51-34 defeat on Jan. 17.

"We are putting some things together," coach Pete Schneider said after his Eagles improved to 13-11. "The fans are liking coming to Lakes (girls) basketball games."

Haviland hit buzzer-beating 3-pointers to end the second and third quarter, too.

"I joked with her after her third-quarter 3-point basket not to shoot unless the clock was running out," Schneider said. "Little did we know."

Haviland finished with 21 points. More importantly, Schneider said, was her leadership and handling of the ball. Olivia Pawlak added 10 points and 8 rebounds for Lakes, while helping hold Lake Forest's Grace Torkelson to 9 points.

"This was a great game from start to finish," Schneider said.

Lake Forest (14-11) held a 23-19 lead at halftime and was up 34-33 after three quarters. Lake Forest's Maeve Summerville hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds to go to give Lake Forest a two- point lead.

"Our plan was to go to Ellie but to get into the paint for a two-point basket," Schneider said. "Sometimes you are really glad that they do not always go as planned."

Haviland got tied up, but regained possession of the ball and nailed the winning 3.

"I am very impressed with Ellie being confident and knowing what is needed," Schneider said. "It is the right time of the year to be putting it together. There has been consistent growth and (the players) are learning that every game is an opportunity for a win and we need to expect to win."

Lake Forest was led Brooke Green with 14 points and Summerville with 11.
