Hersey's back in business, tops Cary-Grove

Hersey's girls basketball team played back-to-back games for the third consecutive weekend when it traveled to Cary on Saturday afternoon.

Coming off a victory over her alma mater (Rolling Meadows) on Friday night, Huskies coach Mary Fendley watched her team pick up its 17th win of the season less than 24 hours later.

Led by Claire Gritt (17 points, 6 steals, 5 assists), Juliette Vainisi (9 points), Gina Miklasz (7 points), Kelly Weyhrich (6 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds) and Maggie Berigan (6 rebounds, 9 blocks), the Huskies (17-5) prevailed 50-29 over the Trojans.

"The girls have done really well managing physically and mentally," Fendley said. "Our focus is to keep battling through our tough schedule, and the ultracompetitive MSL East."

Conant 43, Crystal Lake South 26: Senior Katie Lomas (15 points), sophomore Jorie Wachal (13) and senior Haley Anderson (10) led the visiting Cougars (15-4) in the nonconference game.

Rolling Meadows 76, Harlan (Chicago) 25: Sophomore Katherine Nolan scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the host Mustangs (16-6).

"Katherine Nolan had a tremendous game," said Meadows coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "We received contributions from everyone on the team. Megan King shot the ball well (made six of nine 3-pointers for 18 points) and Meghan Slowik (9 points) played great minutes off the bench."

Kelsey Nolan and Morgan Campagna each added 8 points for Meadows.

Fenwick 67, St. Viator 52: Freshman Myia Clark score 11 of her career and game-high 20 points in the first quarter while senior Kayne Stanley tossed in 10 of her 12 points in the second half for the visiting Lions in Oak Park.

"We played well offensively," aid first-year Lions coach Paul Missavage. "But we got killed on the boards and we had to play better defense. It was the most points we have given up this season"

Brooks (Chicago) 78, Maine West (68): Maine West put up a season-high 68 points but it wasn't enough to hold off the Chicago Public School in Des Plaines.

Leading the offense for West (6-16) were Catherine Johnson (career-high 18 points), Allison Pearson (13), Jessica Riedl (9) and Michelle Fox (8).
