Blackwell comes up big as Schaumburg bounces Palatine

Schaumburg senior Jada Blackwell scored 9 of her team-high 13 points in overtime as the Saxons pulled out a 40-37 girls basketball victory over visiting Palatine in Mid-Suburban West play on Friday.

Blackwell had a big 3-pointer in the extra session along with 4 free throws and a basket while classmate Brittany Reinhart also made a free throw as the hosts outscored the Pirates 10-7 in the extra four minutes.

Sophomore Laura O'Connell tossed in 7 of her 8 points in the first half.

The Saxons (11-9, 3-3) trailed by 6 going into the final quarter, when they outscored Palatine 9-3.

"It was really the team defense," said Schaumburg coach Curtis Goodwin. "We were really good down the stretch and that gave us a lot of opportunities."

Tatiana Doroskin (8 points) and Mallory Gerber (6 points) provided some key offense toward a run at the end of the third quarter and into the fourth that also helped key the victory.

Katie Conklin (14 points) and Monica Masini (13) led the Pirates (9-11, 2-4).

Fremd 59, Barrington 30: Haley Gorecki (23 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals), Bryana Hopkins (16 points, 6 rebounds), Briana Lewis (8 points, 4 assists) and Grace Tworek (7 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) led state-ranked Fremd (18-4) to its sixth win in the MSL West without a loss.

Megan Talbot paced Barrington with 11 points and 4 rebounds.

"I thought it was a good physical game, much more competitive than the score indicated," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "Our kids played hard right to the very end. I was really proud of them. I felt they competed from the beginning to the end, and against Fremd, that is not easy to do."

The Fillies played most of the second half without point guard Kelly Katis, who suffered a head injury, requiring nine staples.

Fremd outscored the Fillies 11-7 in third quarter before going on a 20-5 run in the final period.

"What hurt most is that we shot poorly (25 percent) and we got outrebounded significantly," Barreiro said. "We just gave them too many second chances."

Hersey 51, Rolling Meadows 36: Annie Korff and Maggie berigan each scored 12 points for host Hersey (16-5, 5-1) followed by Claire Gritt (9), Juliette Vainisi (8) and Gina Miklasz (7) in the MSL East contest.

Sophomore Kyra Spiwak led Meadows (15-6, 2-4) with 15 points.

Buffalo Grove 57, Elk Grove 49: Maddie Welter (16 points, four 3-pointers) and Sammy Stejskal (12) led Buffalo Grove (17-7, 3-3), which also received 7 points apiece from Julie Jambrone and Maddy Callahan in the MSL East game.

Amber Lindfors (17 points) and Sarah Pauscher (16) paced the Grenadiers (6-14, 0-6).

Conant 43, Hoffman Estates 27: Jorie Wachal (12 points), Haley Anderson (8) and Katie Lomas (8) led visiting Conant (14-3, 5-1) in the MSL West while Hoffman stands at 4-15, 0-6.

Maine West 48, Glenbrook North 37: Host Maine West (5-15, 5-2) won the CSL North game behind Kayla Pociejewski (13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, Catherine Johnson (12 points, 5 rebounds) and Allison Pearson (9 points, 5 assists).
