Take-charge effort fuels Hersey

Hersey really took charge in its Saturday night boys basketball victory at Wheeling.

The Huskies took six charges on their way to claiming an 84-49 victory in Mid-Suburban East action as they kept a share of the division lead with Elk Grove.

Joe Coffaro led Hersey with 25 points, and Payton Haas had 10.

Wheeling got 15 points from senior guard Nick Janulis and 10 from 6-4 junior forward Ryan Caulfield.

Lake Zurich 82, Carmel 74: Mike Travlos scored 36 points and Will McClaughry added 22 - both career highs - as the Bears captured the opening game for each team in Lake Zurich's MLK tournament.

Lake Zurich led 40-31 at halftime and 53-41 after three quarters. The Bears' lead stretched to as many as 18 point in the fourth quarter.

In head coach Billy Pitcher's place, assistant Don Rowley coached the team. Rowley had 281 wins in 18 seasons as the head coach at Hersey.

Waukegan 53, Schaumburg 42: The Saxons fell behind 18-7 after the first quarter and lost by that same 11-point margin in Wheaton Warrenville South's MLK tournament. Sophomore guard Kameron Powell led Schaumburg with 15 points and Brendan Parker had 11.

The Saxons later dropped a 54-35 decision to Marmion.
