Korff keeps connecting as Hersey wins again

Hersey's newest sharpshooter was at it again on Saturday afternoon at the Glenbrook South dome in Glenview.

Annie Korff had three 3-pointers through Hersey's first 18 girls basketball games.

But in the last two she has four.

The senior guard had two on Friday night and tossed in two more in the first half of Saturday's 48-37 win over the host Titans while scoring a game-high 17 points.

But Korff's offense wasn't even the No. 1 item that impressed Hersey coach Mary Fendley.

"She is just so consistent on offense," Fendley said. "Today was the best defensive game I've seen from her. (Caitlin) Morrison (junior forward who had 11 points) is a great offensive player for them and Annie worked real hard on her."

Korff also has been working hard on her shooting.

"Ever since that Saturday morning we got up early and shot around before the Buffalo Grove game, I've just become more confident," said Korff, who also shared top team rebounding honors with teammate Maggie Berigan (8 apiece). "Even though I've always been a post I have the size of a guard. The coaches have told me I can shoot from the outside. So when I see it, I take it and hope they go in."

They've been going in for sure, and the Huskies (15-5) have been going on a nice run with seven wins in their last eight games.

They had been forewarned about Saturday's game.

Glenbrook South, coached by Prospect graduate Steven Weissenstein who will be inducted into the IHSA Basketball Hall of Fame in May, came into the game with a 17-2 record.

"Before this game and for the past couple of days, coach Fendley and coach (Julia) Barthel (assistant) have been warning us they were one of the best teams in the area," Korff said. "They had beaten some big teams so we knew we had to come and do the best we could to get the job done."

The Huskies got it done with a strong defensive stand in the second quarter, limiting the Titans to 3 free throws.

Claire Gritt added 11 points for the Huskies followed by Gina Miklasz (7) and Kelly Weyhrich (6).

The visitors had 6 3-pointers including 2 from Weyhrich (4 assist, 3 steals), and one apiece from Gritt and Miklasz (3 steals).

Berigan also had 3 steals while Juliette Vainisi handed out 5 assists.

"This is a quality win for us," Fendley said.

St. Ignatius 41, Maine West 39: St. Ignatius senior Hallie Gross converted a layup just before the final buzzer to give the Wolfpack the triumph.

Monica Liwag (12 points), Catherine Johnson (9) and Allison Pearson (7) were top scorers for Maine West (4-15) which was playing St. Ignatius for the first time in the 25th annual McDonald's Shootout at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park.

The two teams are the only ones who have played every year in the shootout.

Liwag had two 3-pointers while Pearson and Johnson each had one.

Prior to the game, Warriors Hall of Famer coach Derril Kipp was honored by tournament director Jim O'Boye. Kipp is the only head coach who has participated in all 25 years of the Shootout which began in 1991 at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Kipp's Warriors and St. Ignatius were purposely matched up on Saturday because they are the only two teams which have participated all 25 years.

Barrington 38, Jacobs 25: Megan Talbot and Bailee McDonald each scored 11 points and Kelly Katis added 7 as the Fillies improved to 8-12 with the nonconference victory.

McDonald also 11 rebounds to give the senior forward a double-double while Talbot had 8 rebounds.

Katis also collected 5 steals and 5 assists.

"Kelly had some tremendous passes," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "And I was very pleased with the way she ran the point with leadership and intensity."

Auri Grayson also pulled down 6 rebounds for the Fillies, who led 23-10 at intermission.

"The girls came out with tremendous intensity tonight and kept it up for all four quarters," Barreiro added. "I was proud of the effort coming off such a tough game the night before (to Schaumburg. "We rebounded well, Bailee and Megan really dominated the boards."

Conant 56, Maine East 15: Sophomore guard Jorie Wachal led Conant with 17 points as the Cougars improved to 14-3 with the nonconference win in Park Ridge.

Bartlett 59, Elk Grove 45: Host Bartlett won the Saturday matinee over Elk Grove (5-13).

Providence Catholic 54, St. Viator 43: Providence Catholic won the East Suburban Catholic Conference game in Arlington Heights over the Lions (6-11, 1-2).
