Fremd, Maine West, Prospect set for 25th Classic

Didn't get enough girls basketball from the 20 games at Fremd's Chicagoland Invitational Showcase last weekend?

Then Jim O'Boye is ready to bring you some more quality action this weekend.

For the 25th year, he is putting on the McDonald's Shootout Chicagoland Girls Prep Classic.

The event, featuring top Illinois team and also powers from out of state, will take place on Saturday and Monday at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park.

O'Boye began the shootout on Jan. 1, 1991 at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena. The first key game that year featured Rossville (Ind.) against Mother McAuley.

To honor that game, O'Boye has matched up Kokomo, Ind., against Mother McAuley on Saturday.

He has also invited all the McAuley players and coaches from that 1991 squad to attend the game with their families. The Mighty Macs' Megan Lucid, who was Illinois' Miss Basketball in 1991, is expected to attend.

Rossville's top player that season, Jennifer Jacoby, was Indiana's Miss Basketball and she will be in attendance on Saturday.

O'Boye has also matched up the only two schools who have played in all 25 shootouts - Maine West and St. Ignatius.

They will be meeting for the first time in the event.

Maine West's Hall of Famer Derril Kipp is the only person who has coached a team in all 25 events. His Warriors and the Wolfpack will meet Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

The two Class 4A state-ranked Mid-Suburban League teams will be on hand.

No. 6 Prospect meets Geneva (also receiving votes in the state poll) at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

No. 4 Fremd faces No. 3 Benet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

Coach Dave Yates' Vikings and Ashley Graham's Knights are leading their respective MSL East and West divisions with 4-0 records and both play today at 7:30 p.m. Prospect visits Elk Grove while Fremd is at Hoffman Estates.
