Kuzmanic's big effort lifts Wheeling

For the fourth straight game and ninth time this season, Deanna Kuzmanic scored in the 20s and Wheeling's girls baskeball team won its sixth straight with a 46-36 victory at Barrington on Tuesday.

The senior guard poured in a game-high 24 points including two 3-pointers as Wheeling improved to 12-4 with the Mid-Suburban League crossover victory.

"Not only is she (Kuzmanic) extremely talented but she plays 100 percent the whole time," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "So it is difficult to defend her and she does nice job making her teammates better."

Hailey Dammeier added 12 points for Wheeling while teammate Hannah Dobrowski chipped in 6 with a 3-pointer.

Kelly Katis led Barrington (7-9) with 13 points while Megan Talbot grabbed 9 rebounds and Bailee McDonald had 7. Teammate Auri Grayson hit a 3-pointer.

Wheeling forced the Fillies into 11 turnovers on 15 possessions in the third quarter.

"That makes it difficult to be successful," Barreiro said. "Kelly Katis tried to spark us offensively but I felt like we never got into a very good offensive flow. In part that was due to the turnovers but Wheeling also played a pretty nice defensive game."
