Maine West easily passing the generosity test

During the holiday season, Maine West's girls basketball team has surely been in the giving spirit.

This past Saturday, the varsity girls took the opportunity to fund raise through a bake sale and raffle at its annual 16-team junior varsity tournament won by Fremd followed by Geneva, Schaumburg and Maine West.

They were able to raise $400 through donations from the tournament and are trying to schedule another event later this month or in February.

The proceeds are going toward offsetting some team expenses, fundraising for a Lake Forest High School coach (three of his five children have serious medical conditions, two have cancer and one has to have heart surgeries throughout her life) and to raise funds for a youth cancer foundation (yet to be determined).

The team is also trying to host another "dine and share" event to increase the fundraising amount.

The Warriors are grateful for any donations whether it be monetary or items to raffle off; a Starbucks in Mount Prospect donated two goody bags to raffle off.

The Warriors have also volunteered their time for other special events or fundraising for good causes. On Dec. 11, they gave their time to help at the Des Plaines Park District Winter Festival at the Frisbie Senior Center.

On Dec. 20, they did a fundraiser at the freshman tournament through a bake sale and raffle

"The parents truly believe that having the girls participate in many team events together, especially when it involves supporting others in need, will help them become more well-rounded individuals," said Maine West parent Victoria Liwag.
