Richardson, Stevenson sink Palatine

Following her basketball team's overtime loss to Evanston at Dundee-Crown, Stevenson guard Ashley Richardson talked about how she enjoyed shooting free throws in pressure situations.

The sophomore showed it again Saturday.

Richardson went 8 of 10 from the foul line, and Stevenson made 24 of 28 free throws, as the Patriots opened the new year by rallying for a 51-42 win over visiting Palatine in nonconference action.

Stevenson (15-1) trailed 35-31 after three quarters but sank 15 of 16 free throws in the fourth.

"We played very well in the fourth quarter, defensively and offensively," coach Tom Dineen said after his Patriots outscored the Pirates 20-7 in the final quarter.

Taylor Buford led Stevenson with 14 points, including 8 of 8 from the free-throw line. Sophia Way (4-of-5 foul shooting) added 12 points, and Richardson finished with 11.

The Patriots received 6 points apiece from Janine Fajardo (3-of-4 foul shooting) and Melanie Despinich. Since its loss to Evanston, Stevenson has won three games in a row.

Fenwick 55, Carmel 49: The visiting Corsairs dropped their first game of the new year, despite 20 points from Emma Rappe.

Emily Casale added 10 points for Carmel, which fell to 6-10 and 1-2 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Alexa Amato had 8 points for Carmel.
