Stevenson falls despite Brunson's 48-point outburst

A record-setting performance by Jalen Brunson wasn't enough to prevent Stevenson's boys basketball team from suffering its first loss of the season.

The Patriots opened the New Year by dropping an 88-81 decision to Chaminade, Mo, in the Cancer Research Classic in Wheeling, W. Va., on Friday.

Brunson poured in a season-high 48 points to break the tournament record held by former Whitney Young star/Duke freshman Jahlil Okafor (32 points). Brunson shot 16 of 26 from the floor (6 of 13 from beyond the arc) and 10 of 14 from the foul line. The Villanova-bound point guard also had 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.

Connor Cashaw added 15 points (two 3-pointers) and 11 rebounds for Stevenson (11-1), which led 66-64 midway through the fourth quarter. The game was tied 55-55 after three.

Chaminade (13-1), from St. Louis, was led by Jayson Tatum's 39 points. Tyler Cook added 22, including six 3s.
