Lake Zurich starts with a Pekin victory

At the Pekin holiday tournament, top-seeded Lake Zurich opened with a win, beating Peoria Richwoods 70-64 on Monday in the first round.

The Bears hung on despite being outscored 29-19 in the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Mike Travlos led the way for Lake Zurich. He poured in a game-high 28 points and hit 4-of-6 three-pointers. He was 7-of-12 from the field overall and hit 10 of 12 free throws.

Jack O'Neill and Tim Spears added 9 points apiece for the Bears while Nick Penny finished with 8 points, Will McClaughry had 7 points and Nick Meyer had 6 points.

Lake Zurich will play twice on Tuesday - at 2:15 p.m. against either Lanphier or Washington, and again at either 8 or 9:30 p.m.

Peoria Notre Dame 33, Grayslake Central 22: At U.S. Cellular Coliseum, in their first of two games Monday in central Illinois, the Rams trailed 27-19 after three quarters.

Grayslake Central received 9 points apiece from Joey Mudd and Michael Benko and 8 from David Llorens.

Springfield 54, Grayslake Central 32: In its second game of the day at the State Farm Classic, Grayslake Central was behind 20-4 by the end of the first quarter. Joey Mudd finished with a team-high 7 points while Michael Benko, Sam Ruhlmann and Jack Beckman each had 5 points.

Mundelein 87, Schurz 64: On Saturday at DeKalb, the Mustangs raced to a 31-14 lead in the first quarter en route to their first win of the season.

Tyler Olson led Mundelein (1-12, 1-3 tournament) with a game-high 21 points, including five 3-pointers.

Malik Doby added 13 points and 5 assists, Jake Parmley also scored 13 points (three 3s), Tommy Marcotte tallied 10 and Kevin Marcotte chipped in 9. The Mustangs also received 8 points, including a pair of 3s, from Austin Blackmer.
