New Trier shows its mettle against Dundee-Crown

New Trier appeared better than Dundee-Crown on paper.

The Trevians proved it on the court.

Storming to early 12-2 lead, New Trier never looked back in cruising to an easy 74-44 win over the host Chargers in first round action of the 32nd annual Charger Classic girls basketball Christmas tournament Friday night in Carpentersville.

"We knew we had to get off to a good start because we knew they (Dundee-Crown) would come out with a lot of intensity and emotion" said New Trier coach Teri Rodgers. "They are a team that plays hard and that is very well coached. I like the way we started and set the tempo for the game."

Led by 6-foot-3 junior center Jeannie Boehm, who scored 8 points early, New Trier (12-0) was able to lead by 10 with 3:55 left in the initial quarter.

"When you have a quality big person like Jeannie you want to get her the ball, said Rogers. "We were patient and the guards did a good job of getting Jeannie the ball. We got a lot of 3-footers early. It opened up the outside game."

With Boehm's effectiveness inside, the Trevians were able to manufacture some open 3-point looks. Haley Greer and Kathryn Pedi canned treys in the first quarter as New Trier led 19-7 after 8 minutes of play.

The Chargers (7-9) didn't quit and sliced the Trevians' advantage to 6, 21-15, with 3:44 left in the half on a 12-foot baseline shot by Jesania Laboy. The Chargers never got closer.

The Trevians seized control of the game, ending the half on a 16-6 run and led 37-21 at intermission.

Greer scored 7 points including a trey and Boehm scored 6 during the game-changing surge as New Trier held a 16-point lead after 16 minutes.

New Trier's biggest lead of the game was 34, 69-35, with 2:48 left after a layup by reserve Jackie Welch.

Boehm enjoyed a monster game for the Trevians filling the stat sheet with 19 points, 13 rebounds, 8 blocked shots and 3 assists. Greer backed Boehm with 13 points including a pair of treys and Rachel West scored 9 with 7 rebounds.

Sophomore center Allison Michalski led the Chargers with 13 points and 9 boards while Laboy scored 8 with 8 boards.

"New Trier is an unbelievably talented team," said D-C coach Sarah Miller. "We need to sustain effort and work ethic for four quarters against quality teams like New Trier."
