Bartlett spreads the wealth, beats Grant

Unselfish.

That word would aptly describe the 2014-2015 Bartlett boys basketball team.

Scoring 23 baskets with 15 assists, the team-oriented Hawks were able to post a 61-47 win over Grant in second round action of the Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs Monday afternoon.

"Anybody on our team can score," said Bartlett senior guard-forward Ryan DiCanio. "We are always looking for the open man and whoever is open gets the ball."

Bartlett (9-2), behind a 14-point effort from DiCanio, who made 4-of-6 from the floor, led winless Grant 32-22 at halftime.

The Bulldogs (0-9) got to within 7, 34-27, on an inside basket from Jason Kaye with 6:08 left in the third quarter. The Hawks responded with a 9-0 run to seize control of the game.

During the pivotal surge, DiCanio had 2 baskets and dished out 2 assists, Jason Hasenberg nailed a 3-pointer and Jordan Anderson hit a 12-footer and dealt out an assist. After the run, Bartlett extended a 7-point lead to 16, 43-27, with 3:55 remaining in the third quarter.

Bartlett's biggest lead of the game was 18, 51-33, after a layup by Robby Jimenez with 56 seconds left in the quarter.

The pesky Bulldogs got to within 8, 53-45, on a putback from Kaye with 5;28 remaining in the game.

Grant couldn't get any closer.

Bartlett, which played 12 players throughout most of the game, was led by DiCanio with 18 points and 4 assists while Augie Russo came off the bench to deliver 9 points which included two 3-pointers. Hasenberg scored 7 points with 2 assists. Anderson (3 assists) and reserve Ben Reyes scored 6 points each.

"We planned on playing a lot of kids the whole game," said Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith. "We have a lot of depth on this team and everybody played well. Ryan played his usual solid game and Augie and Ben did a great job off the bench. We had good energy and got the ball in the paint early to set the tone."

Grant was led by Kaye with 15 points and 9 rebounds while Michael Graves scored 13 points with 5 assists.

"Our early schedule has been brutal," said Grant coach Wayne Bosworth. "To our guys' credit they played hard today. We gave them way too many open looks and we weren't physical enough."
