Prospect finds the range against Streamwood

Prospect came out firing from 3-point range, and the Knights didn't stop until they had secured a 66-38 victory over Streamwood in the opening round of the Wheeling Wildcat Hardwood Classic on Monday.

In rolling up their second-highest point total of the season, Prospect (6-4) advanced to tonight's quarterfinal against Naperville Central.

Sparked by the early long-range sniping by Ernest Kiseliovas, Prospect took off after giving up the lead to the Sabres (0-11), 16-15 with 2:16 left in the first quarter. Kiseliovas, who was held scoreless in Prospect's Mid-Suburban East win over Wheeling on Friday, wanted to make up for that disappointment.

He made up for it in a big way. He hit his first 3 3-point attempts from the deep corner and finished the game with 14 points, including 4 of 7 behind the arc.

"I felt I disappointed my teammates at Wheeling with zero points," Kiseliovas said. "I had to step up, and shooting is what I can do best."

"He got himself going the way we coach our players," Prospect coach John Camardella said. "It's about the type of shot you take, not whether it goes in.

"For the season, we're hitting 38 percent for 3s," said Camardella, whose team made 10 of 23. "The guys were shooting well, and we had 16 assists."

Point guard Kyle Beyak had 6 of those assists and led both teams with 18 points.

Streamwood 3-pointers by Cole Seger and Jaleel Jenkins and a basket by Joey O'Halloran erased Prospect's 15-8 lead and gave the Sabres a brief 1-point lead.

That's when the Knights went on a tear to finish the first quarter with a 9-0 run to lead 24-17. They continued to pull away in the second quarter, leading 32-20 at halftime. They iced the game with a 23-7 third quarter that put Prospect on top 55-27.

"That's what we see guys do in practice," Streamwood coach Paul Kowalyszyn said of his team's early first-quarter effort. "In games, they get pressured and that goes away.

"We tell them they've got to keep trying," Kowalyszyn said. "What (Brendon) Marton did at the end, we want him to do all game."

The 6-3 freshman scored 4 of his team-best 9 points in the fourth quarter.
