Jacobs outlasts Bartlett in OT

After Bartlett's Jordan Anderson hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 55 and it to overtime, it seemed like the Hawks would have the momentum going into the extra session.

Jacobs made sure that didn't happen.

The Golden Eagles outscored the Hawks 16-9 in OT to pull off an exhilarating 71-64 win in first round action of the Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs Saturday night.

"The kids did a great job of managing their emotion between the regulation time and the overtime period," said Jacobs coach Jimmy Roberts. "We told the kids that the Bartlett kid made a great shot and there is nothing we could do about it. Our experience paid off in the overtime. We made shots, made free throws and defended. We want to be in big games against good teams. This was a great win against a great team."

With the game tied at 59 in the extra session, the Golden Eagles went on a crucial 6-0 run. An inside basket by Cam Krutwig, a layup by Chrishawn Orange and 2 crucial free throws by Cory Boeckh gave Jacobs a 65-59 advantage with 1:37 left.

The Eagles sealed the win by making 6-of-8 from the line in the final 45 seconds, 4 by Orange and 2 from Boeckh.

"Fouls really hurt us in the overtime," said Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith. "We fouled their ballhandlers and they made their free throws. We got shoved around inside a little but I like our fight, We lost to a really good team on their home court. It is something we can learn from."

The Hawks (8-2) had no answer on defense for Krutwig, who scored 21 points with 15 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocked shots.

"We watched some film on Bartlett and I was able to get good position on the block," said Krutwig, "The guys also did a great job of getting me the ball in good position to score."

Roberts praised his big guy.

"Cam was a load tonight," said Roberts. "He is the most talented and skilled big man I have coached."

Orange added 20 points including 16-of-19 from the free throw line while Boeckh scored 14 for Jacobs (6-3).

Bartlett (8-2), which was 11-of-18 for 61 percent from 3-point range was led by Ryan DiCanio with 18 points including a pair of 3s while Jason Hasenberg scored 17 with 4 treys and Tyler Pauletti tallied 14 with four 3s.
