WW South falters in second half

It wasn't the second half Wheaton Warrenville South's girls basketball team hoped for.

Despite a 3-point halftime advantage, the Tigers scored just 8 second-half points and fell to Providence 42-31 Saturday night at the Naperville North/Benet Holiday Tournament in Lisle.

"We gave up 20 at half," Tigers coach Rob Kroehnke said. "I was very happy. I told them if we give up another 20 and we lose, they deserve it. That's exactly what happened."

The Tigers (4-9) looked strong in the first two quarters, with senior Olivia Linebarger scoring 11 of her team-best 15 points. But the Tigers lost some of the bounce in their step after the break.

"We gave up 17 in the third and we just got behind the eight-ball a little bit. We only gave up 5 in the fourth, so defensively we did a better job, but offensively we could not (get going). We turned it over, we couldn't execute. We executed one time and we got a layup."

Erin Madigan added 10 points for WW South. Linebarger finished with a double-double, adding 10 rebounds and 5 assists to her scoring total.

Alyssa Jurges led Providence (9-4) with 15 points.
