WW South starting to figure it out

Right on schedule, Wheaton Warrenville South is starting to win some girls basketball games.

After losing their first seven to start the season, the young Tigers have won four of their last five games, including Friday night's 52-38 surprise of Naperville North at the Naperville North/Benet Holiday Tournament in Lisle. The Tigers' lone loss in that stretch is to undefeated Benet.

"There's been many years where that Benet tournament has sort of been our gauge," Tigers coach Rob Kroehnke said. "We sort of can figure it out by then, or maybe we won't figure it out. They've been practicing really well, and it's starting to show on the floor. I'm happy for them, because it was a tough stretch at the beginning."

WW South took a 14-9 lead after one quarter and hung on the rest of the way. Olivia Linebarger scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the second quarter and the Tigers led 31-20 at halftime. The Huskies cut into WW South's lead in the fourth quarter, but they couldn't get closer than 6 points.

"We're playing defense lately," Kroehnke said. "I mean, we were giving up 50, 60 points a game earlier in the year. Now we're closer to that 40 mark, that's where we need to be if we're going to be in games. Everything starts with the defense."

Erin Madigan added 13 points for WW South (4-8). Senior Kayla Sharples scored 17 to lead the Huskies.
