Girls basketball: Lake County roundup

Lakes' girls basketball team had to work hard to pull out a 56-44 win over Marian Central in an opening-round game of the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic at Woodstock on Friday night.

Lakes (5-5) trailed 29-20 at the break.

"We were being outplayed in most areas in the first half and were not taking care of the ball," Eagles coach Pete Schneider said. "We changed some things at the half and adjusted our defense. The pressure paid off with forcing some turnovers and taking (Marian Central) out of their game."

Shannon Hurlbut, Ellie Haviland and Alyssa Brey provided great defensive play, Schneider said, as Lakes held Marian Central to 15 second-half points.

Lakes' Sarah Zellman (9 points) pulled the Hurricanes out of their zone by shooting 3 of 4 from behind the three-point line. Natalie Iacopetti and Nataile Pawlak each had 10 points for the Eagles, while Haviland added 8 points.

"This is a good tournament that has some really good teams," Schneider said. "We get to see teams that we do not see."

Stevenson 74, Mundelein 30: Skylar Blackstock scored a game-high 13 points, as the visiting Patriots improved to 11-0 and 5-0 in the North Suburban Lake Division.

Stevenson also received 12 points from Taylor Buford and 11 apiece from Ashley Richardson and Janine Fajardo.

Mundelein (5-5, 1-4) was led by Maria DeVito's 8 points.

Libertyville 40, Warren 32: The visiting Wildcats overcame a 22-15 halftime deficit in the North Suburban Lake contest to win their sixth game in a row.

Riley Weis scored 13 points for Libertyville (9-3, 4-1), while Becky Deichl added 10.

Warren (1-8, 1-4) received 14 points from Jordyn Hughes.

Wauconda 51, Marengo 17: At Marengo, the Bulldogs opened the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic with a victory, snapping a three-game losing streak and improving to 4-3.
