Falish happy to fill it up for Warren

Jake Falish could fill in as a coach for a day. And with Warren coach Ryan Webber sick with a cold, maybe that could work out, as Stevenson is next up for the Blue Devils.

It was Round Two of Warren-Mundelein. And in this North Suburban Lake Division matchup in Gurnee, Falish doubled his points from the first meeting of the clubs in late November at Mundelein's Thanksgiving tournament. His 20 points helped the Warren cause in a 64-40 romp over the winless Mustangs on Saturday night.

"In the first game, they played much harder on me," Falish said. "In this game, they were giving me much more room."

That meant three 3-pointers for the Warren senior.

Following a quick steal and layup from Warren center Caleb Reams, Falish landed the first of six 3-pointers by Warren (4-5, 2-1), which quickly grabbed a 9-0 lead. Mundelein's Jake Parmley ended any hopes of a Warren shutout with a free throw. The senior scored 10 of his team's last 11 points to finish with a team-high 14 points.

"What a good kid," said Mundelein coach Corey Knigge. "He's worked hard. He was a freshman B player and sophomore B player. Last year, he got a handful of minutes."

On a 3-pointer from Maurice Chambers (10 points), the Warren lead was 12-1. Reams had all of his 6 points in the opening half.

"We started out pretty hot," Reams said. "But we had some trouble in the second half."

Warren had a better second quarter shooting the ball. Chambers nailed another 3 and the halftime lead was 28-13.

"Our guys' effort had been really good," Webber said. "We had 14 steals. But our kids don't always attack the rim. We need to work on our transition from defense to offense."

Actually, it was the Mundelein offense that came out strong after halftime. Kevin Marcotte teamed up with his brother Tommy Marcotte, and while the Mustangs weren't exactly threatening the Blue Devils, it was at least encouraging for the visitors.

It forced Webber to use a timeout.

Falish answered with yet another 3-pointer. CJ Payawal also checked in via the long-distance shot and the Warren lead was safe (44-24) after three quarters.

It was a wide-open fourth quarter. Tyler Olson nailed a 3-pointer for Mundelein. Jalen Deere had a personal 5-point run for Warren. One of his shots landed from 3-point range.

The bad beat goes on for Mundelein. It was the team's eighth straight loss.

"We have to make plays," Knigge said. "We have to fight. We just have to attack."

Parmley did just that. The senior closed with two free throws and two 3-pointers.
