Dundee-Crown falls to DeKalb

Undersized Dundee-Crown realized it would take a solid 32-minute effort to beat the visiting DeKalb boys basketball team.

The Chargers stayed with the talented Barbs for 16 minutes, leading 16-15 at halftime.

But DeKalb utilized its size and talent in outscoring the host Chargers 32-23 in the second half to post a 47-39 win in nonconference action in Carpentersville Friday night.

"We played a good first half and played tough on the defensive end," said Dundee-Crown coach Lance Huber. "Their size was too much for us in the second half. We just didn't match up very well with them inside. They buried some big 3s and in the end they were the better team. The kids played hard, we just couldn't get on any type of roll in the second half."

Sam Buckley and Kiwaun Seals each scored 6 points as the Chargers led by 1 at intermission.

The Chargers' defense forced 9 Barb turnovers and held the visitors to 30 percent shooting (5-of-15) in the first half.

DeKalb (5-1) seized control of the game in the third quarter. Led by the inside play of Luke Davis (4 points) and the outside shooting of Ethan Conroy and Mike Pollack, who each hit 3-pointers, the Barbs started the second half on an 11-1 run.

After a trey by Conroy, DeKalb led 26-17 with 3:25 left in the third quarter.

"The third quarter was key for us," said DeKalb coach Al Biancalana. "We lacked intensity in the first half and we challenged them at halftime. We came out with much more fire and focus in the second. half. We did A better job of being patient and got the ball inside more. Dundee-Crown is a proud program and they came out and played hard. They are a quick team with a lot of toughness."

DeKalb, which outscored Dundee-Crown 17-6 in the third quarter, led 35-22 heading into the final 8 minutes.

The Chargers (2-5) didn't quit and pulled to within 6, 45-39, on a layup by Nick Shydlowski with 33 seconds left. But the Chargers couldn't get any closer.

Davis led the Barbs with 17 points, 13 in the second half. The junior center also snared 11 rebounds and blocked 3 shots. Jace Kitchen was the only other Barb in double figures with 11 points.

Seals and Buckley, who scored 33 of the Chargers' 39 points, tallied 18 and 15 respectively.
