Glenbard East comes from behind to win

The Glenbard East boys basketball had been hanging with Bartlett all night Saturday, but it was three big hustle plays in the fourth quarter that helped send the Rams to a 57-47 victory.

The Rams had an offensive rebound, a steal and a charge to help cut a 44-38 deficit to 43-43 when another offensive rebound followed by a layup from Bryce Roberts gave them their first lead of the game.

With the score 44-43 Glenbard East had all the momentum and closed the game for its second Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division victory.

"Zach Walsh getting the charge down there kind of turned it a little bit," said Rams coach Scott Miller. "Mike Finley diving on the floor, making that second, third effort, and then Roberts on that second, third tip-in to give us that bucket. Those were huge and that's what we've been preaching from the beginning."

Despite a triple-overtime victory Friday night against West Aurora, the Hawks (5-1, 1-1) started quickly, hitting four 3-pointers and going down low to Jason Hasenberg to get out to a 22-11 lead.

In the second quarter Patrick Peterkin and the Rams (3-3, 2-0) fought back to cut the deficit. Glenbard East started the quarter with a 8-0 run by shutting down the 3-point shot and Peterkin hit two 3-pointers to get the Rams into halftime down 30-28.

"It was very important (to shut down their shooting)," Peterkin said. "Coach talked to us about shutting down their shooters in practice all this week. Without it we probably wouldn't have won."

Despite Bartlett outscoring Glenbard East 13-10 in the third, the Hawks seemed to be straying away from the long ball and seemed a step behind an energized Rams squad.

When the big plays came in the middle of the fourth quarter, the Hawks could do nothing but watch.

"We knew coming in we were going to have a tough game on the road at their place," said Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith. "After a big game last night you could see we were heavy legs … . In the fourth quarter we kind of lost our cool … . We kind of gave them easy baskets while we were forcing shots and missing shots."

A nice jumper from Terrance Lakes put Glenbard East up 46-45. Free throws from Finley and Roberts increased the lead to 50-45 with 1:11 to play.

After two technical fouls on Bartlett, Glenbard East went to the free-throw line to increase its lead to 54-45, finishing the night going 14 of 21.

Peterkin finished with a game-high 16 points and Lakes with 10 points. Hasenberg had 12 points for Bartlett.
