Boys basketball: Week 1 MVP

Cole Gentry has earned Daily Herald boys basketball MVP honors for his performances in the first week of the season.

Gentry averaged 24 points as the Saints went 3-1 in the tournament they hosted.

Cole Gentry, St. Charles East: The senior point guard averaged 24 points to lead the Saints to a 3-1 record at their annual Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Tournament. Gentry set the bar high scoring 30 points in a 79-71 season-opening win over East Aurora. Overall he made 24 of 29 free throws and averaged 4.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals.

Justin Chaney, Palatine: Confidence seems to be making the difference for Chaney and his teammates as the Pirates won the Molitor Thanksgiving Classic title for the first time in the program's history. Chaney, a 6-foot-3 senior forward, had a team-best 13 points in a 58-46 victory over Deerfield in the championship game after 16, 9 and 23 in Palatine's first three victories.

Ryan DiCanio, Bartlett: This 6-foot-3 shooting guard helped Bartlett take the title at the Wheaton Academy Thanksgiving Tournament when he scored 8 of his team's 9 points in overtime to defeat the host school 62-59. DiCanio's game-high 24 points gave him 79 points for the 4-game tournament.

Rhashaun Epting, IC Catholic Prep: The Knights went 4-0 and claimed the championship at the Coal City Thanksgiving Tournament behind a dominant effort from their 6-foot-5 junior guard-forward. In the four wins Epting averaged 21 points, 5 rebounds and 3.8 assists including a 42-point performance in a 73-53 victory over Morris.

Mike Travlos, Lake Zurich: Talk about a week. Three days after scoring the 1,000th point of his career, the senior guard led the Bears to the Thanksgiving tournament championship at Grant. He was named MVP of the tourney after averaging 19.8 points per game, which included a 29-point effort against North Chicago.
