Will closer to record as Prospect rolls

Taylor Will scored a game-high 25 points on Tuesday night in Mt. Prospect to help lead Prospect to a 72-38 victory over visiting Schaumburg.

Will, a senior guard headed to Brown University, closed to within 5 points of becoming the Knights' all-time leading scorer in girls basketball history.

She made 10 field goals (three 3-pointers) and 2 free throws on Tuesday at the Jean Walker Field House, named after the coach who was in charge when Colleen Grant set the school record of 1,352 points from 1977 to 1981.

Will (1,348 points) will try to make Prospect history at the Ken Carter Gymnasium on Friday night when the Knights (5-0) face host Hersey (5-1) in the first game (6 p.m.) of a boys-girls doubleheader that kicks off play in the Mid-Suburban East.

Joining Will in double figures on Tuesday were her classmate Catherine Sherwood (12 points) and sophomore Haley Will (11 points).

The Knights raced to a 27-6 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

"I was really proud of how the kids came out to start the game," said Knights coach Ashley Graham. "They scored 27 points in the first quarter and a lot of it was in transition. We hardly set up in the half-court offense. We had some great box-out rebounds and outlet passes that led to transition points."

Sophomore Laura O'Connell led Schaumburg (2-4) with 11 points.

Rolling Meadows 33, Barrington 22: Megan King (11 points), Katherine Nolan (7), Kyra Spiwak (6) and Hannah Mickey (6) led defending Mid-Suburban East champion Rolling Meadows (5-1) in the MSL crossover.

The host Mustangs led 11-7 at halftime.

Abigail Elo paced visiting Barrington (2-4) with 8 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

"In the first half, 15 of our 34 possessions were turnovers which makes it difficult to put points on the board," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "We were very solid on defense and rebounded well but offensively we made too many mistakes and we missed too many shots (shot 13 percent from the field).

"Alex Van Ryne played a good game on both ends of the floor. It's a long season and we've got a lot of games left. But we will need to correct some of these mistakes quickly."

Conant 39, Elk Grove 25: Nireet Dhillon (9 points), Katie Lomas (8) and Alissa Wachal (6) were top scorers for visiting Conant in the MSL crossover.

Dhillon (7 rebounds), Jorie Wachal (8 rebounds) and Haley Anderson (7 rebounds) each had 3 assists for Conant (4-1).

Elk Grove (2-4) was led by senior center Amber Lindfors (6 points).

Buffalo Grove 51, Palatine 32: Coming off a championship in its own tournament, the host Bison improved to 6-0 as Maddy Callahan (10 points), Maddie Welter (9), Julie Jambrone (9) and Teagan Hutchings (8) led the way.

Palatine (2-3) was led by Katie Conklin (10 points), Ashley Shapiro (8), Sydney Rzepka (6) and Monica Masini (6).

Wheeling 56, Hoffman Estates 33: Senior Deanna Kumanic scored 18 of her game-high 24 points in the first half as host Wheeling improved to 5-2. Senior Hailey Dammeier added 10 points for the winners.

Monraia Wilson and Erin Hanson each scored 11 points for Hoffman (1-5).

New Trier 66, Maine West 22: Freshman forward Jessica Riedl scored all of her team-high 7 points in the first half for the visiting Warriors (1-5) in the Central Suburban League crossover.

Downers Grove South 47, Leyden 43: Alondra Chavarria (15 points), Autumn McGee (12 points) and Artasia Gusman (10 points) led host Leyden (3-2).
