Girls basketball / Lake County roundup

Junior Kelly Johnson scored a career-high 20 points, and Antioch's girls basketball team rebounded from a tough loss the previous day to Niles North to edge Wheeling 53-52 at Niles North on Saturday.

Antioch (4-2) finished 3-2 in the tournament.

Johnson scored 12 points in fourth quarter, making 10 of 12 free throws to secure the victory. She sank a pair of 3-pointers.

Johnson, Carly McCameron and Amy Reiser each pulled down 5 rebounds to help Antioch win the rebounding battle, which Sequoits coach Tim Borries said was key to holding tournament MVP Deanna Kuzmanic to only 6 points in the first three quarters.

Kuzmanic finished with 22 points, which included four 3-pointers.

McCameron also scored 9 points, while Shannon Zogran came off the bench to add 7.

Amy Reiser, who scored 7 points as well, and Ashley Reiser were named to the all-tournament team for Antioch.

Libertyville 47, Mother McAuley 44: Claire Keefe and Becky Deichl each had double-doubles to lead the Wildcats in their tournament finale at Buffalo Grove.

Keefe had 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Deichl tallied 16 points and 10 boards.

"Mother McAuley really tested us," Libertyville coach Greg Pedersen said. "We feel good going 3-2 in this tournament."

Grayslake Central 47, Westinghouse 34: At Buffalo Grove, Quin Garbett's 12 points led three Rams in double figures.

Lauren Spalding and Juliana Frusolone added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Grayslake Central.

Niles North 42, Antioch 38: On Friday, the Sequoits erased a 23-14 halftime deficit to pull even at 28-28 after three quarters, only to be outscored 14-8 in the fourth quarter.

Antioch coach Tim Borries said his team "came out flat and committed too many mental mistakes," adding that it missed "too many free throws and layups in the final stretch of the game."

Amy Reiser was a bright spot for the Sequoits, scoring 25 points for the second game in a row and grabbing 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
