Brunson, Stevenson get off to a nice start at new site

Stevenson's boys basketball team is liking the Hinsdale Central/Lyons Thanksgiving tournament, after opening the season in Buffalo Grove's tourney in recent years.

Behind Jalen Brunson's 30 points and 5 assists, the Patriots defeated host Lyons 71-39 Tuesday night. Stevenson opened tournament action Monday with an 80-36 victory over Argo at Hinsdale Central.

Stevenson led only 19-16 after one quarter but stretched its advantage to 39-25 by halftime. Brunson had 23 points at the break. The Patriots were up 57-33 after three.

Justin Smith, who played on varsity as a freshman last season, added 12 points for Stevenson.

Grayslake North 61, Guerin Prep 40: At Johnsburg, Dom DiPova scored 22 points and Aidan Einloth added 16, as the Knights opened their season by spoiling the debut of former Carmel coach Tim Bowen as Guerin's coach.

Both DiProva and Einloth sank three 3-pointers. Grayslake North bolted to an 18-9 lead after one quarter, was up 29-17 at halftime and 49-26 after three.

Grayslake Central 71, Christian Liberty 40: At Buffalo Grove, the Rams were victorious in Kosta Kougias' head-coaching debut, as they had three scorers in double figures.

Jack Beckman and Michael Benko each scored 13 points for Grayslake Central, while Sam Ruhlmann added 12.

Marian Central 62, Antioch 54: At Woodstock, the Sequoits enjoyed a brief third-quarter lead but trailed 42-40 entering the fourth and couldn't recover.

Antioch fell to 1-1.

Woodstock 65, Round Lake 26: At Woodstock, the host Blue Streaks led 19-4 after one quarter and 36-10 at halftime.

Round Lake fell to 1-1 in the tournament.

Antioch 51, Woodstock 47: On Monday night at Woodstock, Jason Mrkonich scored 14 points and Trevor Koch added 13, as the Sequoits opened their season with a win.

Stevenson 80, Argo 36: On Monday night at Hinsdale Central, Connor Cashaw's 22 points and Matt Johnson's 18 led the Patriots to a season-opening victory.
