Hersey teams up to top Barrington

In the final quarter, the starters on the Hersey bench were cheering for their teammates on the floor just as loud as the reserves had been applauding at the start of the game.

"That's the first step we like to take - being good teammates," said senior forward Annie Korff. "Whatever we can do to keep everyone happy and positive, that's what we all do."

And the Huskies kept their fans quite happy all evening at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

Bursting out to a 14-0 lead, Hersey kept the pressure on start to finish in a 71-39 victory over Barrington on Tuesday night to complete pool play in the Buffalo Grove Bison Classic.

"Being good teammates isn't just at games but across the board," said Hersey girls basketball coach Mary Fendley, whose team is 3-0. "It's in practice, too. Fans may only see it at our games but to be a good team you have to do it all the time and these girls do."

The Huskies will play Mother McAuley at 1 p.m. on Friday and Buffalo Grove (also 3-0) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

All games will be at Buffalo Grove.

"We are happy we get to go into the weekend playing for a championship," Korff said. "We won our Thanksgiving and Christmas tournament last year, so it's great to have another chance this year. These tournaments tell us what we have to work on and what to expect in the future."

Future opponents can expect to see a lot of different scoring weapons from the Huskies, who had four players in double figures and nine on the scoring column.

Sophomore Claire Gritt led the way with 19 points, followed by Korff, senior Juliette Vainisi (14) and sophomore Gina Miklasz (10).

"Hersey is a very good team," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "They've got a lot of weapons. I love their go-go-go attitude and they don't give up on anything.

"We gave up too many 50-50 balls. We spent a lot of time getting ready for their pressure but we didn't really do well against it."

The Huskies created turnovers and drove for basket in the first quarter to set the tone. Vainisi scored 8 of her points in the first five minutes.

Korff scored 8 of her points in the second quarter.

"Almost everyone on our team has scored so that's pretty good for three games," Korff said. "We always know anyone we put in the game can score."

Sophomore Kelly Weyhrich helped set up a lot of that scoring with 5 assists. She also had a pair of free throws in the final quarter when freshman Erin McGrath, sophomore Carly Cooper, senior Emma Slosar and junior Maggie Berigan also put points on the board.

Hersey built the lead to 28-12 in the second quarter.

Barrington junior forward Megan Talbot helped the Fillies (1-2) cut into it when she scored 3 baskets in less than three minutes, going to the basket hard.

"Megan had some good moments," Barreiro said. "She is very capable of taking over like that. I thought Kelly Katis (5-foot-5 junior guard) worked real hard. She played a hard game."

Talbot finished with 10 points while Katis had 9 and Tamara Zivak 8.

Bailee McDonald came off the bench to chip in 6 for the Fillies.

"Our liked our fight," Barreiro added. "We were down 14-0 and didn't give up.

"We are going to have to battle through some aches and pains but I have faith in these kids. We just can't get out-hustled for balls. We will be all right. We have to keep remembering it's a marathon, not a sprint."
