Title test in store for Rolling Meadows, Fremd

We've seen this before.

The Rolling Meadows and Fremd girls basketball team will play for a championship.

The two teams, which have played for the Mid-Suburban League crown the last three years, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to settle the title of the Turkey Thriller at Lake Zurich High School.

Both improved to 4-0 in the tourney on Tuesday night - Fremd with a 65-28 triumph over Lake Zurich and Rolling Meadows with a 65-37 victory over Cary-Grove.

Senior Haley Gorecki (game-high 21 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals) led the way for the Vikings while junior Brianna Lewis (14 points, 4 assist, 4 steals) and Bryana Hopkins (13 points, 9 rebounds, 7 steals) followed.

Sophomore Grace Tworek added 4 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists and 3 blocks for the Vikes, who held Lake Zurich to 8 points in the second half and just 2 in the fourth quarter.

Fremd was up 25-20 at the half and went on a 40-8 run in second half.

"Credit Lake Zurich, they played a great first half," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "They knocked down open shots and outplayed us in the first half."

Frankie Nasca led Lake Zurich (2-2 tourney) with 10 points.

"Chris Bennett does a great job and he kids came ready to play," Yates added. "We played with a little more gusto in the second half. We need to be more consistent with our effort from the get go. Hopefully we will learn from this and play a better first half in the future. We were not ready to play. That is my fault."

Rolling Meadows 65, Cary-Grove 37: Junior guard Megan King and sophomore guard Kyra Spiwak both scored 18 points to pace the Mustangs' victory over the Trojans.

"Jamie Berry (5 assists, 4 rebounds) set the tone with her defensive play," said Mustangs coach Ryan Kirkorsky, who did not return a starter from his team that finished second in the Class AA state tourney the last two seasons. "And I was proud of how all of our kids executed our defensive game plan. Megan King shot the ball well and played a solid all-around floor game."

Junior guard Jen Pilut led Cary-Grove with 9 points.

Elk Grove 62, Deerfield 43: Elk Grove notched its second win in the Turkey Thriller as senior center Amber Lindfors scored a game-high 25 points, converting 10 baskets and 5 free throws.

Marjorie Sloan (9 points), Carly Crothers (8) Abbey Sloan (6) and O'Rayn Macavoy (6) were other scoring leaders for the Grens, who led 22-10 after one quarter.

Resurrection 43, Wheeling 39: Resurrection handed the Wildcats (3-1) their first loss in the third round of the Niles North tournament.

Senior Deanna Kuzmanic scored 18 points with three 3-pointers to lead Wheeling, followed by Melissa Claver (11).

Jacobs 40, St. Viator 29: Freshman Maya Clark led St. Viator (1-3) with 10 points at the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament.
