Double-duty Duehr helps Antioch get it done

Lakes 53, Deerfield 49: Olivia Pawlak had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Eagles to their first win of the season.

Deerfield led at halftime 25-22, as its outside shooting was tough to slow down, Lakes coach Pete Schneider said. The Eagles turned to the 6-foot-3 Pawlak and her 5-11 sophomore sister, Natalie.

"We told the team we wanted to exploit our size advantage and work the post players," Schneider said.

Sophomore Natalie Iacopetti put in 15 points and had to handle the ball as starting point guard Ellie Haviland got into early foul trouble. Lakes (1-1) got great defensive efforts from Sarah Zellman, Nicole Denman and Alyssa Brey.

"We are 10 strong and these kids push each other every night in practice," Schneider said. "These are great kids. They work hard, play hard and have plenty of fun."

Margot Sylvan and Elena Brichacek had 16 and 14 points, respectively, for Deerfield (0-2).

"Deerfield is a tough team," Schneider said. "They play hard and can get physical with you. They have a couple of kids that can really shoot the ball. ... (Coach) Mike Muldrow always has his kids prepared. They are going to win a lot of games this year."
