Hononegah runs past Jacobs

Rarely are games decided in the first quarter.

This one was.

Hononegah, connecting on 9-of-18 shots from the floor and 3-of-6 from 3-point range, outscored Jacobs 27-6 in the first quarter en route to an easy 69-48 win Friday at the Dundee-Crown girls basketball Thanksgiving tournament, a game that was played at Crystal Lake South.

The teams scored 42 points each during the final three quarters.

"I wish this was like one of my Nintendo games and I could erase the first quarter," said Jacobs coach Joe Benoit. "They have such a great history and they will be one of the best teams we play this year. They have a nice mix and run the floor so well. I liked our effort and the way we were diving on the floor in the fourth quarter."

The Indians' biggest lead was 30, 43-13, after a putback by Emily Gorsch with 2:11 left in the first half.

"I liked our energy to start the game," said Hononegah coach Randy Weibel. "We have 10 or 11 kids we are comfortable with. We have a new system and the kids are still learning."

Meagan Matuska, Tiana Thomas and Gorsch led the Indians (3-0) with 10 points each.

Jennifer Barnec paced Jacobs (2-1) with 11 points while Jessica Hernandez and Carly Sidor had 10 apiece.
