Boys basketball: Scouting Carmel

CARMEL CORSAIRSCoach: Zack Ryan (1st season)

Last year: 25-9 (3-5 ESCC)

Last year's tournament: Lost in sectional championship to North Chicago, 79-70.

Key players lost: C Jack George (Elon), G Billy Kirby (Cardinal Stritch), F Michael Barr, G Nickai Poyser (Winona State, football).

Key players returning: G Chris (C.J.) Duff, jr.

Newcomers: G Shareif Belser-Baily, jr., G Brian Julien, soph., F Tim Owens, sr., G Julian Johnson, sr.

Outlook: Not even a full year removed from an appearance in the sectional championship game, it's a season of transition for Carmel. The Corsairs welcome in first-year coach Zack Ryan, who replaces Tim Bowen. Meanwhile, only one player returns with any significant minutes from last year under his belt. Chris (C.J.) Duff averaged 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists per game in helping Carmel win 25 games. It was just the third time in school history the Corsairs, led by graduated big men Jack George (14 points per game) and Michael Barr (10 ppg), has won more than 20 games in a season. "Our commitment since June 1 has been outstanding," Ryan said. "We consistently had 25 to 30 kids at open gym and lifting five days a week in the fall. The kids have all bought into what we are trying to do and it's been really exciting to see. It will take some time for everyone to jell." Newcomer point guards Shareif Belser-Baily and Brian Julien will help Duff in the backcourt. "They are all unselfish and play well together," Ryan said. Another newcomer, 6-foot-5 senior Tim Owens, will give Carmel some size inside. "I think the key to the season will be the play of Owens," Ryan said. "He has very good skill and athleticism and has the ability to really affect the game. He showed at times this summer the ability to be the best player on the floor. I am expecting a lot from him." Overall, though, Carmel doesn't have much height after Owens. "We are going to play at a fast pace to take advantage of our quickness," Ryan said.

Opener: Monday vs. McHenry at the Crystal Lake Central Thanksgiving tournament.
