Boys basketball: Scouting Grayslake Central

GRAYSLAKE CENTRAL RAMSCoach: Kosta Kougias (1st season)

Last year: 16-2 (11-1 FVC Fox)

Last year's tournament: Lost in the regional final to North Chicago, 71-53.

Key players lost: G Malcolm Reed, F Alex Lennartz (St. Cloud State, football), Charles Anderson, Jacob Vargo, Matt Loeffl (Augustana, baseball)

Key players returning: G Joey Mudd, sr., F Sam Ruhlmann, jr., F Michael Benko, sr., F David Llorens, sr., F Oronde Fleming, sr., C Jack Beckman, jr.

Newcomers: G DeJon Goodman, soph., F David Kienzle, jr.

Outlook: First-year head coach Kosta Kougias inherits a pretty nice situation at Grayslake Central from former coach Brian Moe, who is now the school's athletic director. Not only are the Rams coming off a Fox Valley Conference Fox Division championship, they also return some firepower from that team that covers all positions on the floor. Guard Joey Mudd is back along with forwards Sam Ruhlmann, Michael Benko, David Llorens and Oronde Fleming as well as center Jack Beckman. "We feel good about the upcoming season because we are bringing back players with plenty of varsity minutes from last year," Kougias said. "The hope is to build off of last year's conference division championship." The Rams must find a way to make up for the production of graduated standouts Charlie Anderson and Malcolm Reed, two honorable mention all-area picks from last year. Newcomers DeJon Goodman and David Kienzie will help on the perimeter.

Opener: Tuesday vs. Christian Liberty at Buffalo Grove Thanksgiving tournament
