Deichl paces Libertyville victory

Becky Deichl scored a game-high 17 points, and Libertyville's girls basketball team opened its season with a 53-45 win over Barrington at Hersey as part of the Buffalo Grove Thanksgiving tournament Thursday night.

Claire Keefe added 12 points for the Wildcats.

"We're very pleased with our effort tonight," coach Greg Pedersen said. "It was a great first game of the season, with contributions from a number of new varsity players."

First-year varsity players Hannah Heraty and Molly Cayce each hit a 3-pointer for Libertyville.

Stevenson 75, Schaumburg 42: At Schaumburg, Sophia Way led all scorers with 21 points, and the Patriots hit a school-record 12 3-pointers in improving to 2-0 and 2-0 in the tournament.

Ashley Richardson (14 points) and freshman Kiana Cencula (10) also scored in double figures for Stevenson. Melanie Despinich added 9 points.

Way and Despinich each made three 3-pointers, while Richardson sank a pair. Cencula, Jessica Burke, Janine Fajardo and freshman Klaire Steffens also hit 3s for the Patriots, who led 19-8 after one quarter.

"We played very, very well," coach Tom Dineen said.

Mother McAuley 67, Grayslake Central 45: At Buffalo Grove, the Rams dropped their tournament opener.

Lauren Spalding and Quin Garbett scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Grayslake Central (0-2).
