Leyden wins coach Kuzmanic's first game

Stephanie Kuzmanic did a lot of winning as a four-year starting guard at Wheeling High School and Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis.

So it was quite appropriate her coaching career started with a win as well.

Making her debut as Leyden's girls basketball coach on Tuesday night in Bensenville, Kuzmanic's Eagles posted a 52-48 victory in overtime over host Fenton.

Schaumburg 62, Rockford Boylan 59 (OT): Coming off an impressive run in the state volleyball postseason, senior Jada Blackwell and sophomore Mallory Gerber didn't miss a beat in their new sport.

Blackwell, who was an all-area setter, scored 24 points and Gerber added 23 as the Saxons topped Rockford Boylan 62-59 in an opening-round game of the Saxons Thanksgiving Tournament.

Boylan's Kayla Steward (game-high 28 points) tied the game at 52 with two seconds left in regulation.

The game was tied at 59-59 in OT when Gerber made a free throw for a 60-59 lead.

Blackwell then made 2 free throw with less than five seconds left to seal the deal.

Lake Park 55, Maine West 34: Junior Kayla Pociejewski (10 points), junior Monica Liwag (8) and freshman Allison Pearson (7) were top scorers for Maine West in its opening game of the Hoffman Estates tournament.

Niles West 38, Hoffman Estates 33: Jennifer Nailor and Erin Hanson led Hoffman Estates with 7 points apiece in the Hawks' opener of their own Thanksgiving tournament.
