Girls basketball: Lake County roundup
Senior forward Kasey Firnbach scored a career-high 26 points, and host Vernon Hills' girls basketball team opened its season with a 67-45 win over Maine East in the Cougar Classic on Monday night.
Firnbach also grabbed 8 rebounds, while Becky Bahlmann added 14 points and 3 steals.
In other tournament action, Lake Forest Academy defeated Lake Forest 49-42 and Woodstock North beat Glenbrook North 47-37.
Mundelein 47, Highland Park 39: At Mundelein, the host Mustangs won their tournament opener, as senior guard Natalie Busscher and junior post Madison Davis scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Senior guard Maria DeVito added 9 points for Mundelein.
"I thought it was exactly what I thought it would be," Mustangs coach Brian Evans said. "It was raggedy and foul-ridden, because that's the way we practiced.
"But it's better to play that way and come out with a win than go away with a loss. Highland Park gave us everything we expected they would."
Highland Park received 10 points apiece from junior guard Dahlia Cohen and senior guard Sydney Levenfeld. Freshman guard Kirby Bartlestein added 8 points. Each player hit two 3-pointers.
Glenbrook South 47, Carmel 33: At Mundelein, in the first of three games, the victorious Titans received 17 points from Ashley Oldshue.
Emma Rappe led Carmel with 13 points.
