Palatine great Fyfe earns spot in Lawrence's Hall of Fame

Mid-Suburban League boys basketball fans of the early 1970s will no doubt remember watching the solid play in the middle by Palatine High School center Doug Fyfe.

Now Fyfe will be remembered by Lawrence University when he is inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony takes place on Oct. 10, and the six inductees will be honored at the Fall Festival football game on Oct. 11.

Fyfe was a dominant post player for Lawrence and set a career scoring standard that stood for nearly two decades.

The 6-foot-5 center scored 1,342 points for Lawrence to set the school's career scoring record. He broke the record of fellow Hall of Famer Joel Ungrodt, who set the mark of 1,247 from 1961-64.

A two-time All-Midwest Conference selection, Fyfe averaged 15.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game while shooting 51.5 percent from the floor for his career.

His 15.7 points per game ranked fifth in Lawrence history when he graduated and is still good for seventh on the list.

Fyfe grabbed 710 rebounds, which trails only all-American Chris Braier and Brad Childs on the career list.

Fyfe also set Lawrence records for field goals made (500), free throws made (342) and free throws attempted (532).

He was the team captain and enjoyed his best scoring season in 1974-75 when he averaged a career-best 18.1 points and had a career-best 8.6 rebounds per contest.

As a senior, Fyfe averaged 17.1 points per game while shooting 54.4 percent from the floor. He earned all-conference honors for the second straight year.

With Fyfe leading the way, the Vikings started to turn the basketball program around.

During his final season (1975-76), Lawrence made it to double-digits with 10 victories for the first time since the 1953-54 season.

Fyfe, who received his law degree from DePaul University College of Law in 1982, is a partner at Bollenbeck Fyfe, S.C., in Appleton.

He and his wife, Linda, have four children, Geoff and Ross Fyfe and Patrick and Andrew Rock, and one grandchild.

Rugby

The Arlington Stallions improved their fall season record to 4-1 with a 29-6 win Saturday over a combined Palatine Pioneers/West suburban Bulls team in Osage Park in Palatine.

Strong back line play by the Pioneers/Bulls kept the outside running attack that had served the Stallions so well this season in check for most of the match.

In response, the Stallions' big man combination of Dave Woloch (Prospect) and Cody Bayless (Hersey) took the game over, scoring two tries each and making multiple long runs to relieve pressure when backed up defending their own goal line.

Coach Paul Bergman said that making some position changes have proved important to get the Stallions more quality opportunities in the offense.

"Playing Dave (Woloch) at number eight and Cody at flanker puts them in spots during play where they can make a real impact," Bergman said. "Playing those positions requires a high level of fitness and they have lived up to the required work rate very well so far. We're looking for more progress from them both over the remainder of this fall."

Relentless defensive play by sophomore forward Joe Fasolo (Hersey) earned him Man-of-the-Match honors.

The Stallions travel to Lemont on Saturday for a match with the spring season state champion Waubonsie Chiefs.
