Fremd's Gorecki second in Class 4A showdown

After Rolling Meadows advanced to the Class 4A state championship for the second year in a row, the 'Queen of the Hill' Class 4A 3-point showdown took center stage at Illinois State's Redbird Arena.

Ottawa senior Jasmin Bailey was at the top of her game, converting on 10 to edge Fremd junior Haley Gorecki by 1.

Gorecki, an all-state guard for the Mid-Suburban League champion Vikings, shot first and converted 4 of 5 from the right baseline, 3 from the top of the key and then 2 from the opposite baseline.

"It felt nice to go first, you don't feel as much pressure," the highly-recruited Gorecki told the IHSA network. "It's a little nerve-wracking but it's fun."

Bailey was the second shooter and made 4 from her first and second sets of shots before adding the final two.

Lincoln-Way North senior Samantha Pietruszynski, the third shooter, made 8 while Jacobs senior Alyssa Lach was the fourth contestant to shoot and tossed in 6.

Bailey advanced to Saturday's finals of the 'Queen of the Hill' competition where she will face the champions from Class 1A (senior Amanda Cheek of Ullin (Century), 2A (senior Devin Curry of Watseka) and 3A (senior Kelsey Walsberg of Pontiac). That competition will take place after Saturday's Class 4A third-place game.
