Boys basketball: Scouting the Class 3A Genoa-Kingston regional final
Class 3A Genoa-Kingston regional final
No. 1 Sycamore (21-7) vs.
No. 2 Wheaton Academy (20-8)
Outlook: Sycamore is led by 6-3 forward Devin Mottet, averaging 14 points; and 6-3 center Ben Niemann, an Iowa-bound footballer who grabs 10 rebounds. Guard Jake Winters rounds out an all-senior starting five that tied for the Northern Illinois Big 12 East lead. Coach Andrew Stacy's Spartans beat Montini 83-49 and seek a first regional since 2004. First-year Wheaton Academy coach Peter Froedden questioned the Warriors' toughness early but down the stretch they're 11-1, the sole loss to Benet. They gutted out a 45-44 win over Burlington Central to seek a first regional title since 2011. Gordon Behr, 6-8, had 15 points, 13 boards and must avoid fouls. Three ace Josh Ruggles didn't score but that probably won't last.
Advancement: The winner advances to play the winner of the Woodstock regional final between Marengo and Marian Central in Wednesday's Hampshire sectional semifinal.
