Smith, Webb key VH's regional triumph

Sydney Smith and Lauren Webb each scored 17 points, and Vernon Hills' girls basketball team kept rolling Friday night, capturing a regional championship for the third year in a row thanks to a 57-25 victory over Regina Dominican at Gordon Tech.

Top-seeded Vernon Hills (24-5) advances to Monday's 6 p.m. Class 3A Ridgewood sectionals and will play No. 4 North Chicago in a semifinal.

The win was Vernon Hills' 13th in a row.

The Cougars were slow out of the gate but went on a run in the second quarter to push their lead to 22-11 by halftime.

Smith also grabbed 4 rebounds, while Webb contributed 6 rebounds and 4 blocks.

Kasey Firnbach chipped in 6 points and 5 rebounds for the Cougars.
