Maine West wins as Bongiorno collects win No. 200

It was an evening of nice, round numbers for the Maine West boys basketball program.

The Warriors squared their season record at 8-8 with a 77-63 victory over Chicago Collins as Maine West coach John Bongiorno earned career victory No. 200.

More important to him than that was the way his team’s been playing of late. The Warriors have won 5 of their last 6 and are just 1 game off the lead in the Central Suburban North.

“We were 4-8 at one point, but we’re practicing better, and we’re playing better,” he said. “I can see us gaining a little bit of confidence.”

Jamal Sherman led the way against Collins with 22 points, but it was a balanced effort as Anthony Dones, Joel Ferraren and Matt Acevedo finished with 14 points apiece and Adam Wessel had 11.

Maine West trailed 30-29 at the half but scored 24 points in each of the final quarters.

“We were able to get some turnovers and get some fastbreaks,” said Bongiorno. “That’s our bread and butter.”
