Vernon Hills extends quality run

Vernon Hills’ girls basketball team continued its stretch of quality wins Saturday night.

With a 59-49 victory over visiting Barrington, led by 16 points apiece from Sydney Smith and Lauren Webb, the Cougars improved to 18-5.

After beating Antioch the previous Saturday, Vernon Hills followed up with wins over Fenwick and North Chicago, before handing Barrington just its fifth loss in 21 games this season.

Kasey Firnbach added 9 points for the Cougars, who have won six in a row. Smith added 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Webb and Smith scored 7 and 5 points, respectively, in the opening quarter — each player hit a 3-pointer — in helping the hosts build a 16-6 lead.

Vernon Hills was up 28-23 at halftime and just 44-43 after three quarters, before outscoring the Fillies 15-6 in the fourth. The Cougars sank 13 of 14 free throws in the final quarter. Smith was 4 of 4 from the line, while Katherine Koczwara, Firnbach, Monica Bahlmann and Webb each went 2 of 2. Dana Meline split of pair of free throws.

Grayslake North 58, Crystal Lake Central 56: Maggie Fish scored 19 points and Kendall Detweiler added 17 for the visiting Knights in the Fox Valley Fox Division game.

Grayslake North (15-8, 7-1) also received 10 points from Brittney Thibeaux.

Crystal Lake Central’s Evelyn Youel led all scorers with 20 points.

Stevenson 70, Lake Zurich 24: Taylor Buford’s game-high 20 points led the visiting Patriots in the North Suburban Lake Division game.

Stevenson (17-7, 8-1), which hosts Zion-Benton in a division showdown game Tuesday night, opened up a 12-2 lead after one quarter and was up 29-11 at halftime.

Janine Fajardo and Sophia Way added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Patriots.

Lake Zurich (6-15, 2-8) was led by Theresa Baumann’s 10 points.

Antioch 55, Round Lake 24: Paige Gallimore had 10 points, 3 steals and 3 blocks, and the visiting Sequoits bolted to a 19-2 lead after one quarter in the North Suburban Prairie contest.

Hannah Bohn sank a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 8 points for Antioch (18-6, 8-2), while Sage Keyes chipped in 6 points and 8 rebounds. Alexis Duehr (5 points) and Kristen Kelly (6 points) each collected 6 rebounds.

Seven players scored for Round Lake (3-19, 0-10), which was led by Justice Clark’s 6 points.

Grayslake Central 39, Hampshire 33: Morgan Dahlstrom scored 18 points to lead all scorers and led the host Rams in the Fox Valley Fox game.

The game was tied 19-19 at halftime, before Grayslake Central (15-7, 7-1) outscored Hampshire 16-4 in the third quarter. Dahlstrom scored 8 points in the quarter, while Maddy Miller tallied half of her 8.

Warren 56, Lake Forest 47: The visiting Blue Devils snapped a four-game losing streak in earning the North Suburban Lake victory.

Warren improved to 6-17 and 3-7 in the division.
