Kaneland closes with win

Kaneland took ninth place at the Plano Christmas Class with a 45-40 victory over Dixon on Monday.

The Knights (7-3) finished the tournament with three straight wins after dropping their opener to Newark.

Tyler Carlson led the Knights with 19 points, John Pruett scored 17 and Ryan David had 8.

At East Aurora: Rallying from a 12-point deficit, Aurora Central Catholic (1-10) forced overtime before falling 73-71 to Oak Lawn in the fifth-place game at the East Aurora Holiday Tournament. Despite top scorer Sean Harreld fouling out with 6:16 left in regulation, Mac Cowen and brothers Brett Czerak and Andy Czerak lifted the Chargers down the stretch. A free throw by Matt Schaefer sent the game into overtime tied 62-62. ACC led 69-65 on an Andy Czerak layup from brother Brett’s bounce pass, but Oak Lawn (3-6) closed on an 8-2 run, including a game-winning 3-pointer, to win 73-71.

“As long as we’re getting better that’s the most important thing, we’ve just got to keep improving,” said Chargers coach Nathan Drye. “Outside of the slow start I thought we battled pretty hard today to get back in it. We just couldn’t finish it when we had a chance to.”
