Bartlett holds off Buffalo Grove

Bartlett girls basketball coach Denise Sarna would have preferred a different shot late in the game with the score tied Saturday.

Ashley Johnson got the shot she wanted though and hit a 3-pointer with 28 seconds remaining to break a 49-49 tie as the Hawks beat Buffalo Grove, 52-50, at the 31st annual Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown.

“At that point in the game, we always preach, ‘Let’s look for a layup,’ ” Sarna said. “I’m proud that she took that shot. She was confident. That’s her best shot.”

The Hawks (8-7) will play for 13th place at 11 a.m. Monday against Resurrection, which beat Dundee-Crown on Saturday. The Bison (6-10) face the host Chargers at 9:30 a.m. in the 15th-place game.

Angela Budimir’s 3-point play with 1:07 remaining in the fourth quarter tied the game at 49-49 for Buffalo Grove, which rallied from a 10-point third-quarter deficit. Bartlett had the ball out of bounds with 38.3 seconds remaining. Johnson was open in the right corner and hit her second 3-pointer of the game to give Bartlett the lead for good.

“We needed some points,” said Johnson, who finished with 8 points off the bench. “Our coach told us we needed a layup for sure, but I was open in the corner so I put it up.”

The Bison’s Bri Kolbus hit 1 of 2 free throws with 6.2 seconds remaining to make it 52-50. The rebound on the second shot was controlled by the Hawks’ Elizabeth Arco, but she was out of bounds. Arco tipped the inbounds pass as Buffalo Grove tried to get the ball into Courtney Meyer. Meyer recovered the ball near midcourt, but was called for traveling with 1.5 seconds left. The Hawks got the ball in and ran out the clock.

“We’ve got an issue with playing four quarters and playing intense all four quarters,” Bison coach Stephen Kolodziej said. “The last five or six games we’ve put ourselves in a hole and digging out to try to get back to even.”

Arco led all players with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Ally Giampapa had 9 points for Bartlett. Kelly Harris also 8 points and 8 rebounds.

Meyer, who hit 3 3-pointers, led the Bison with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Budimir had 11 points. Maddie Welter added 8.
