Big finish for Apel, BG; Hersey drops a close one

Andrew Apel scored 28 points, most of it through the first three quarters, to help Buffalo Grove ease past Corliss 69-53 in the consolation third-place game of Elgin’s boys basketball tournament Saturday.

Senior forward Joe Domingo contributed 14 points for Buffalo Grove, which ended up going 2-2 in tournament games.

Corliss, which shot 7-for-23 from the foul line, was held to 8 points in the second quarter and 9 in the third.

Apel made three 3’s for BG (5-8), which shot 14-for-21 on fouls.

at Pekin

Morton 41, Hersey 39: Alex Mueller tied for game-high scoring honors with 20 points, but the Huskies came up short in their tournament finale to finish 1-3 at Pekin.

Hersey led 39-38 before Morton’s Ian Saathoff drew a foul with 1:21 left. He made 1 of 2 to tie it at 39.

Hersey (4-9) missed a shot with 1:02 left, then got the rebound before committing a turnover.

Morton took a timeout with 0:16 left, and the 6-foot-6 Saathoff scored on a layup with 0:11 left for the game’s final points.

Barrington 93, Johnsburg 70: Barrington finished with a flourish in the Hinkle Holiday Classic, scoring a season-high offensive output in a 93-70 victory over Johnsburg.

Austin Madrzyk scored 25 points with three 3-pointers, and Rapolas Ivanauskas had 20 points for Barrington.
