Top-seed New Trier routs St. Charles North

St. Charles North girls basketball coach Sean Masoncup would have liked it much better had his team played the entire game like it played the second half Thursday.

But the North Stars fell behind top-seeded New Trier 18-0 and could never recover in a 72-44 loss in the opening round of the 31st annual Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown in Carpentersville.

The North Stars (6-8) will play Resurrection in a 12:30 p.m. consolation bracket game today.

Morgan Rosencrants led St. Charles North with 12 points and Sam Novak added 10. Six-foot-3 Jeannie Boehm carried New Trier with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

“They’re undefeated for a reason and one of the top 10 teams in the state for a reason,” said Masoncup of the Trevians, who will take a 13-0 record into today’s 5 p.m. quarterfinal against Maine West.

“We got our bell rung (in the first half) but we responded in the second half. We played much better in the second half and I’m proud of the effort. But we gotta understand that has to be right from the start.”

The North Stars trailed 45-19 at halftime but then only lost the second half 27-25. St. Charles North scored its first points on a 3-pointer by Kyla Helsel with 1:33 left in the first quarter.

SCN was just 12 of 41 shooting for the game and had 23 turnovers, 16 of them in the first half.
